I found for best results squirting a couple of pumps on the area you are tanning then rubbing it in worked well. I first exfoliated, shaved, put on a tiny bit of lotion and then waited an hour so my skin was clean but not wet or oily.I then dried off to make sure ai had no lotion residue and used the mitt to evenly work the tan in on my skin.
