Marmot Basin is heaven on earth if you love unpretentious, untamed skiing. Getting here: Fly into Calgary and take a couple of days to make the spectacular drive up the Icefields Parkway. It has a good mix of terrain for different abilities and the option to keep things quiet in the resort or dive into aprs in the town. From the slopes, majestic views stretch out over the Bow Valley and surrounding mountains and beyond to the palatial Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. There is a good mix of ski area above and below the treeline, offering both wide-open views and protected glades. Getting here: Fernie nestles in the Lizard Range of the Canadian Rockies, in the East Kootenay region. Best for: Intermediates. Sun Peaks is Canada's second largest ski area, after Whistler but is still largely unknown outside of Canada and even one of the lesser-known resorts within Canada.
